Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing demand to strengthen religious moderation within Islamic education as a response to social dynamics, diversity, and the potential for intolerance in school environments. School principals play a strategic role in directing curriculum development that is not only oriented toward academic achievement but also toward fostering moderate, inclusive, and civilized attitudes. This study aims to explore the leadership of school principals in the development of a religious moderation-based Islamic Education curriculum, particularly in the aspects of curriculum planning, implementation, and evaluation. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design conducted at an Islamic educational institution. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the principal, Islamic Education teachers, and educational staff, participatory observation of curriculum development practices, and document analysis. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, involving ten participants. Data analysis was conducted through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing based on the interactive analysis model. The findings reveal that the principal serves as the primary driver in integrating religious moderation values into the curriculum through strengthening the school vision, facilitating teacher collaboration, and fostering an inclusive academic culture. Furthermore, the success of curriculum implementation is strongly influenced by leadership capacity in building shared understanding and maintaining policy consistency at the school level. This study concludes that principal leadership is a key factor in the internalization of religious moderation values within the Islamic Education curriculum, contributing to the development of value-based educational leadership theory and providing practical implications for strengthening curriculum policies in Islamic educational institutions.
